A Legacy of Conservation and Stewardship
At Puʻu O Hōkū Ranch, our dedication to conservation and sustainable land management has been a cornerstone since the land was first acquired in 1987. From the very beginning, the ranch has operated with organic practices, ensuring that our agricultural methods respect and enhance the natural environment. Today, as proud members of The Long Run, the world’s largest nature-based tourism organization, we share the vision that tourism can create lasting prosperity while fostering a healthy and resilient planet. Guided by The Long Run’s 4Cs framework—Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce—we join a global community of changemakers dedicated to accelerating positive impact on the environment and society.
Our ranch is home to several notable conservation initiatives. We have placed thousands of acres into permanent conservation easements, ensuring the long-term protection of this precious landscape. Our easements with the Hawaiʻi Land Trust protect miles of shoreline and vast stretches of pastureland and hillsides that extend to the Moloka‘i Forest Reserve. We are proud to have pioneered Hawaii’s first Safe Harbor Agreement between private landowners and government agencies to safeguard the state bird, the endangered Nēnē Goose. Alongside partners like Sustainable Coastlines, we work tirelessly to keep miles of pristine coastline free from harmful plastics and marine debris. Through our native plant propagation program, we are actively restoring rare and endangered species. As part of the East Moloka‘i Watershed Partnership, we hope to maintain a healthy watershed that will sustain the future quality and quantity of Molokai’s water supply, as well as benefit Hawaii’s native flora and fauna. We uphold the highest standards of sustainable agriculture, nurturing crops that thrive in harmony with the land’s natural cycles.
Beyond restoration, Puʻu O Hōkū Ranch plays a vital role in wildlife management, addressing growing ungulate populations through a combination of paid and community hunts, which provide food for Molokaʻi residents. This integrated approach helps maintain ecological balance while supporting the local community.
Our work is not just environmental but cultural: the lands under our care include historically significant sites like Ulukukui o Lanikaula, the sacred kukui grove. These cultural treasures will be preserved for future generations.
Through these efforts, Puʻu O Hōkū Ranch continues to embody the principles of conservation and ecological stewardship, ensuring that this working landscape remains a sanctuary for wildlife, agriculture, and culture—safeguarded in perpetuity.
